Cistus creticus belongs to the family Cistaceae which contains 160 species. In Greece there are five native species which are all endemic. It is a herbaceous plant or a shrub that can grow to over one meter. Its leaves are simple, wavy and are basally arranged, they also have hairs, the glands from which they can excrete oil. The flowers are big and white through to red. They are hermaphrodite, usually with five petals (2).
It is a perennial species.
It likes dry and rocky ground; it can also be seen growing in places that have suffered from fire. Due to it being a first colonizer it may help the land to recover (1).
It can be found throughout the western and central Mediterranean Basin. However it is predominantly found in Crete.
