Wrangelia penicillata has an erect thallus with a cloud-like filamentous covering; the branches are dense, and alternating (1; 2). The alga is 10-50mm in size and has a whitish-yellow to reddish-brown colouration (1).
There are twenty-two species within the genus Wrangelia (3); none of the species are listed under the IUCN Redlist (4).
W. penicillata is found within shaded biotopes in depths of 0–30m (1).
W. penicillata is found within the Mediterranean; with additional sightings from Mauritius (5).
W. penicillata uses photosynthesis, as well as requiring various inorganic nutrients, such as carbon dioxide, phosphorus and fixed nitrogen (2).
Not listed under the IUCN Redlist (4).
