Snowdrop (Galanthus ikariae)

The genus Galanthus is in the Family Amaryllidaceae. Closely related species include Narcissus, Leucojum spp. and Acis spp. (1). The leaves are glossy, bright green and shiny. The white flowers droop and the inner sepals contain a green mark at the notched apex (2).
It is a bulbous perennial and produces a single flower per bulb (2). The flowers bloom in late winger and early spring, between February and April (1).
It likes clay based and loamy soils. The soil must be well drained, but moist. It is found in woodlands and rocky habitats, banks and stony meadows (1).
Found on the Aegean islands in Greece (1) it has also been introduced to the British Isles (3).
